Over the past few weeks, I’ve talked to many people my age and older, and it shocks me that not many people know, or care enough to learn, how to manage their money.
Most of us in our late teens and early 20s have big aspirations for the future, and rightfully so—dream big. However, social media distorts our expectations by constantly showing us how the top 1% live. Influencers make it seem easy to 'get rich quick,' which leaves many of us sitting around, scrolling, and waiting for the right opportunity to just fall into our laps. Social media has contributed to making us one of the laziest generations in this regard—we’d rather wait for success to happen than seek out knowledge or learn from failure; I’m guilty of this too.
Of course, not everyone in Gen Z fits this stereotype, but many do. Financial literacy is one key area where people my age seem too lazy to invest time in learning. A lot of us bank on having successful careers, but if we don’t have the discipline to learn the basics now, how will we develop the skills needed to climb social classes?
With this blog, I’ll cover a range of personal finance topics. I used to be part of that same crowd, but I realized how much of an impact social media was having on my mindset and my life. This isn’t to say that social media doesn’t have its benefits—TikTok in particular has become an educational resource for me in many ways (though I take it all with a grain of salt). Still, I’ve found that it often does more harm than good. Since I started limiting my time on these platforms, I’ve noticed a major increase in my productivity and overall happiness.
I am confident in how I manage my money now, and I know that if I keep discipline with my principles, then I will be wildly successful. But I am learning that not everyone is fully educated on what to do with their finances. Financial literacy is the most important thing to know in order to reach those wild aspirations you have. If you can’t manage your money correctly, you are risking losing it all (don’t think it can’t happen, it is much easier than you think).
I don’t make any money from writing this. I just want to help as many people as I can see how important this topic is and how liberating being in control feels. Stick with me as I try to provide practical skills for you to use in your own life.
